Vel'Koz Mid Lane Wild Rift Guide
Who counters Vel'Koz in Wild Rift? The toughest Vel'Koz mid lane counters are Zed, Akali, and Fizz. Full Vel'Koz Mid Lane counters and matchups, plus the best build, runes, and game plan for Patch 7.2c.
Overview
Vel'Koz is a long-range artillery mage who wins fights before the enemy can get close. Plasma Fission splits at a tap to bend around minions, Void Rift rolls out and detonates a moment later, and Tectonic Disruption pops a target into the air. Land enough of it and his passive converts a chunk of his damage into true damage that armor and magic resist cannot reduce. His plan is simple: shove the wave, sit at the edge of the enemy's reach, and poke them out of lane before they touch you. He is not a fast roamer, but his range is its own kind of map pressure, and with priority he can contest scuttle or an objective with poke from a safe distance. In teamfights his channeled laser sweeps across a clumped team and melts anyone who stands still, tanks included. The catch is built into the kit. He has no dash, no blink, nothing but a slow between him and a committed diver. Everything he does is a skillshot, so a miss wastes a full rotation, and mid lane assassins exist to walk through his poke and kill him. Vel'Koz wins from extreme range or not at all.
Strengths
- Huge range and layered skillshots let him out-poke and zone almost every immobile mid.
- His passive turns steady poke into true damage, so tanks melt as fast as squishies.
- His channeled ultimate is one of the best teamfight buttons in the game against clumped teams.
Weaknesses
- No mobility of any kind, so divers and gap-closers run him down once they get past the poke.
- Everything is a skillshot, so a missed rotation does nothing and good dodging starves his game plan.
- Squishy and easy to pin down; hard crowd control or a windwall can shut his damage off completely.

Vel'Koz Mid Lane Counters
Who counters Vel'Koz Mid Lane in Wild Rift (WR)? These champions beat Vel'Koz in the mid lane matchup, with how each one wins. Learn to play around them or ban them in ranked.
- Zed: Zed is built to walk through your skillshots and delete you from a shadow before your next rotation lands; once his ultimate is up, one clean combo takes your whole health bar.
- Akali: Her shroud eats your targeting and her dashes cover the distance your poke is supposed to protect. She survives the early chip, then all-ins once her items arrive, and you cannot answer the dive.
- Fizz: His hop makes him untargetable straight through your rotation, the worst thing possible for a champion made entirely of skillshots, and he dives you the second you mistime a cooldown.
- Katarina: Her blink closes your range instantly, her resets turn one kill into several, and a single missed skillshot from you becomes a free all-in with no way to run.
- Norra: An artillery mirror where her angles beat yours: her bounce hits from lines your straight skillshots cannot, her dog drags your immobile frame out of position, and her rift threatens you in fights.
Champions Vel'Koz Is Strong Against
Vel'Koz's best matchups in Wild Rift. Vel'Koz holds an edge against these picks in the mid lane role, so look to press the advantage and contest objectives.
- Annie: Annie has to walk into stun range to threaten you, and your reach means she eats a full rotation on every approach, so she struggles to ever close the gap safely.
- Veigar: He needs the cage to land before anything else works, and you out-range the setup completely, chipping him every time he walks up to farm.
- Syndra: Syndra is immobile and her effective range falls short of yours, so she has to walk into your poke for every last hit. The matchup gets tighter once her items come in.
- Orianna: You out-range the ball, so she cannot set up her shield-and-clear rhythm without eating poke, and your range plus true damage wins the long game.
- Ryze: Ryze has to get close to deal real damage while you massively out-range him, and your true damage ignores the shield and health he builds.
Early Game
Play the lane at maximum range, never as a brawler. Chip with split Fission on the walk-up, put Void Rift through the wave so it detonates on whoever last-hits, and keep your spacing so they are always in your range and you are never in theirs. Keep the wave shoving toward them, since farming from max distance also pokes for free and denies them a safe approach. Track your passive stacks: a target sitting on two stacks is one rotation away from taking true damage, so that is your window to commit. Watch the river, because you have no escape, and a flanking jungler gets a free kill if you have wandered too far up.
Mid Game
This is your tempo phase. Once your first item lands, the poke starts doing serious damage, so shove the wave in and use your range across the map: stand back from a contested scuttle or dragon and rain Void Rift and Fission into the pit before your team even arrives. You will not out-roam a Twisted Fate on foot, but mid priority plus your reach lets you decide whether an objective fight happens on good ground. Set up around dragon and Herald by standing where your ultimate threatens the choke, and look for the knockup into a full rotation on anyone who steps too far forward. Always keep minions or a teammate between you and the flank, because a side laner who finds you alone does not need to dodge much.
Late Game
Your poke is now at full power and the true damage makes their defensive items almost pointless. Sit at the very back of your formation, poke the enemy down before the fight starts, and hold your ultimate for the moment their team stacks on an objective or a choke. Vision keeps you alive here: one missing ward is the difference between zoning their carry and dying instantly to a flank. Pick off stragglers with a full rotation, soften the frontline so your divers have a path, and never be the closest target to anything that can dash. Late-game Vel'Koz wins by killing people from a distance they cannot close.
Teamfights
You are backline artillery, and your value is range plus the true-damage finish. Open with poke to chunk whoever fronts the fight, knock up the first diver who commits to break their angle, and save the ultimate for the instant their team clumps, because a laser swept across three bodies usually ends the fight right there. Stand behind every teammate you have and assume a flank is always coming, since you have no button to answer a gap-closer who reaches you. Let your frontline hold while you melt everything behind it. A Vel'Koz who lands the clumped ult and walks away alive wins the fight; one who positions greedily dies instantly and contributes nothing.
