Katarina Mid Lane Wild Rift Guide

Who counters Katarina in Wild Rift? The toughest Katarina mid lane counters are Kassadin, Diana, and Irelia. Full Katarina Mid Lane counters and matchups, plus the best build, runes, and game plan for Patch 7.2c.

Overview

Katarina is a reset assassin. Her daggers are the core of the kit: every blade that lands on the ground becomes a free dash and a fresh burst of damage, so a fight that looks like one combo is really a chain of resets, each landing on a new target. Bouncing Blade spreads, Shunpo closes the gap to a champion or a dagger, and Death Lotus is a channeled spray of blades that punishes anyone who groups up. She is melee, mobile, and built to delete the squishiest person on the map and walk away. She wins through snowballing, not lane dominance. She shoves the wave, leaves, and turns a careless side lane into a kill, then turns that gold into the next pick. A takedown refunds her cooldowns, so one kill in a skirmish often becomes two or three, and a Katarina who gets ahead early is a problem the enemy spends the rest of the game trying to peel off their backline. Roaming is not optional for her; it is the plan. Her weakness is that the kit needs a window, and a smart team refuses to open one. She has no defense once her dash is spent, hard crowd control catches her mid-channel and ends both the ultimate and her life, and the early levels before her first item are a thin melee stretch where any ranged laner can shove her in and chip her down. She earns her lead by finding the one mistake the enemy was not supposed to make.

Strengths

  • Her dagger-and-Shunpo loop chains blinks and resets, so one takedown can cascade into a multikill before anyone reacts.
  • One of the best roamers in mid: she shoves, leaves, and turns side-lane mistakes into snowballing picks.
  • Elite at deleting squishies in fights, since she can blink past the frontline and drop her whole rotation on a carry.

Weaknesses

  • Thin and melee early, easy to shove in and harass before her first item and resets come online.
  • No real defense once Shunpo is spent, so a single point of hard crowd control deletes her mid-combo.
  • Heavily snowball-dependent: shut her down early and she has no scaling pattern to fall back on.

Katarina Mid Lane Counters

Who counters Katarina Mid Lane in Wild Rift (WR)? These champions beat Katarina in the mid lane matchup, with how each one wins. Learn to play around them or ban them in ranked.

  • Kassadin: He scales past the snowball you are trying to build: his ultimate gives him a blink to dodge your dive and chase your retreat, and his magic shield blunts the burst you live on.
  • Diana: The moment you Shunpo in, she shields the burst, drops her crowd control, and all-ins you back with better defenses than yours, while her own resets snowball off your death.
  • Irelia: At melee range she simply out-duels you: she out-sustains your daggers, her minion resets snowball faster, and her stun punishes any dive with lockdown you have no answer to.
  • Lissandra: Her claw roots your engage, her ultimate freezes you mid-combo or saves her from your dive, and she has the burst to punish a melee assassin who commits without a window.
  • Galio: His passive magic resist and shield mean your full combo barely dents him, while his knockup interrupts your channel and his taunt locks down your dive before you reach the carry.

Champions Katarina Is Strong Against

Katarina's best matchups in Wild Rift. Katarina holds an edge against these picks in the mid lane role, so look to press the advantage and contest objectives.

  • Veigar: A slow, immobile mage whose whole kill setup is a cage you can blink straight out of. He scales hard if left alone, but he rarely survives long enough to get there against you.
  • Lux: Lux lives and dies by landing her binding. If she misses it, she is a stationary mage on a long cooldown with no escape from your dive.
  • Orianna: Her ball control and shield make her hard to chip, but she is immobile, and one clean commit kills her before she can reposition the ball for the shield.
  • Vel'Koz: His long-range skillshots and true damage make the early lane a chore, but he is rooted in place and squishy, and your blink chain crosses his whole zone before the next ability lands.
  • Akali: Her shroud breaks targeting, but your daggers hit the ground she stands on and Shunpo can target the blade, so the trick that saves her elsewhere fails, and you out-reset her in skirmishes.

Early Game

The opening is the part you survive rather than win, because you are a short-range melee against people who mostly out-poke you. Use Bouncing Blade to last-hit and chip the wave, drop a dagger near the enemy and Shunpo to it for a quick burst, then step back before they answer; a clean dagger trade is your only real pressure before items. Do not facetank ranged harass trying to force something. Soak the farm, hold your dash for the gank that is probably coming, and track the enemy jungler constantly. Keep the wave moving so you can leave on your timing, not theirs, and once your full combo comes together, the lane stops being a problem and your roaming game begins.

Mid Game

The mid game is your strongest phase, and it is all about tempo and the map. Shove the wave in, then leave. A Katarina with priority does not sit mid; she walks to a side lane, finds someone a step too far up, and turns one Shunpo into a kill that refunds her cooldowns for the next one. Your resets mean a successful gank tends to multiply, so look for the double kill instead of settling for one. Help your jungler take scuttle, and use your roam threat to swing dragon and herald fights, because arriving first with a reset available beats any amount of farming. The danger is overstaying in a lane you already pushed: once the wave is gone you are a free kill if the enemy collapses, so leave on the shove and let the snowball work.

Late Game

Late game you are the answer to whichever enemy carry got greedy with positioning, and almost nothing else. You do not split push into duels you can lose, and you do not stand in front trading hits. You hover at the edge of the fight waiting for the dagger field and the angle to line up. At full build your blink chain crosses most of a teamfight in seconds, and a clean Death Lotus on a grouped backline removes them. The flip side is that one missed read ends you, since you have no defensive button to save a bad commit. Let their crowd control get spent on someone else first, then enter from the angle nobody is watching. A Katarina who walks out of fights alive wins games; one who dives on cooldown into a waiting stun just respawns.

Teamfights

Your job is killing their carry, and you do it from the flank, not the front. Wait for the fight to spend its lockdown on your tank, then pick your target: blink in on a dropped dagger, drop more under their backline, and let Shunpo bounce you between targets while the resets keep the chain alive. Death Lotus is the payoff, but it is a stationary channel that leaves you exposed, so save it for when their stuns are down or you will get knocked out of it. Never enter first and never duel the frontline; every dagger should be aimed at the people who actually deal damage. Time the entry right and you delete their carry and reset out before the peel arrives, which is the whole reason to play Katarina instead of a diver who only gets one jump.
