Jayce Mid Lane Wild Rift Guide

Who counters Jayce in Wild Rift? The toughest Jayce mid lane counters are Irelia, Lissandra, and Swain. Full Jayce Mid Lane counters and matchups, plus the best build, runes, and game plan for Patch 7.2c.

Overview

Jayce switches between two weapons, and that switch is the whole champion. In Cannon stance he pokes from very long range with a charged shot and drops an Acceleration Gate to make it hit harder. In Hammer stance he is a melee brawler with a knockback, a damage aura, and the burst to finish what the poke started. A good Jayce pokes you down from range, then swaps to Hammer the moment you are low enough to kill. In mid he is a lane bully who plays for tempo, not the late game. His plan is to win the early levels outright: shove with cannon poke, chunk you every time you walk up to farm, then turn that lead into roams and objectives. He is one of the few mids whose poke alone creates tower pressure, and he can fire a charged shot through his own gate to start a fight from very far away. The catch is that he falls off. Once everyone has items and health bars, his burst stops one-shotting and his sustained damage is ordinary. He is squishy, his only real escape is the Hammer hop, and a diver who gets close after it is spent gets a free kill. Jayce has to turn an early lead into a closed game, because the longer it drags, the weaker he gets.

Strengths

  • One of the strongest early laners in mid: long-range poke plus a burst stance bullies almost any immobile or short-range matchup.
  • Two stances give him answers to everything: ranged harass for the farming phase and melee burst when you misstep into kill range.
  • The Acceleration Gate speeds teammates into ganks and lets him fire shots that start fights from very long range.

Weaknesses

  • Falls off as the game scales: his burst stops deleting people once items and health bars show up.
  • Squishy with one escape, so a diver who closes after his Hammer hop is spent kills him easily.
  • Demanding to play: every trade involves stance swaps, and a fumbled swap turns a kill combo into nothing.

Jayce Mid Lane Counters

Who counters Jayce Mid Lane in Wild Rift (WR)? These champions beat Jayce in the mid lane matchup, with how each one wins. Learn to play around them or ban them in ranked.

  • Irelia: Irelia dashes through the wave to close the range your game depends on. Your poke hurts before her items, but once she spikes, one gap-close puts her on top of you.
  • Lissandra: Point-and-click crowd control is the cleanest answer to a champion who lives on spacing, and she has it twice. Her self-stasis cancels your Hammer all-in, and her waveclear shrugs off your poke priority.
  • Swain: Swain heals through the poke that beats most mids and grows too tanky to burst. His long root pulls you into his combo, and his drain refills whatever you chip away.
  • Vel'Koz: Vel'Koz is the rare artillery mage who out-ranges your gated shots and chunks harder, his true damage ignores whatever bulk you build, and you have no gap-closer to punish his immobile frame.

Champions Jayce Is Strong Against

Jayce's best matchups in Wild Rift. Jayce holds an edge against these picks in the mid lane role, so look to press the advantage and contest objectives.

  • Ryze: Mana costs hold his early game back, and your poke punishes him every time he steps up to last-hit. The pressure is yours early, though he keeps scaling while you do not.
  • Vladimir: Vladimir's early game is weak, and his sustain only matters if he gets to heal in peace, which your constant poke denies. The lane is yours until his late-game scaling arrives.
  • Katarina: You massively out-range her, so every step she takes toward a minion costs health, and she never gets the kills her snowball depends on. Your knockback can even interrupt her ultimate channel.
  • Yasuo: His windwall only stops projectiles, and your Hammer damage is not one, so the tool he counts on against ranged mids does little here. You also out-range him early for free farm.
  • Kassadin: Kassadin's early game is helpless against your poke range, and he pays for every last-hit before his ultimate comes online. The catch is timing: a farmed Kassadin blinks through your poke late.

Early Game

The first few levels are where you make the game. Start in Cannon stance, drop the gate, and fire charged shots through it so each one hits harder, chunking the enemy every time they step up to last-hit. Shove the wave with that poke and force them to farm under your harass or give up the lane. When they drop low, that is your swap window: gate forward in Hammer, knock them into your follow-up, and burst. Remember that once your hop is on cooldown you are a squishy melee in someone's range, so do not over-commit a dive you cannot walk back from, and track the enemy jungler before pushing up.

Mid Game

Once you have lane priority, spend it on the map, because mid pressure is worth more than another wave of poke. Shove, then walk to river: gate a teammate onto a scuttle fight, lob a cannon shot over the wall to zone enemies off dragon or herald, or roam to a side lane where your poke and knockback turn a close skirmish into a clean pick. This is your best stretch of the game, so play it aggressively; a Jayce who sits in lane farming wastes the exact window where he is strongest. Help your jungler take the early objectives your lane lead opened up, and watch for side lanes you can reach with gate speed. The tempo you build now is the lead you carry into the phase where your damage falls off.

Late Game

Late game you have to accept your limits. Your burst no longer one-shots a fed carry, so stop hunting picks and play as a poke and tempo tool. Soften the enemy backline with cannon shots before fights start, shove a side lane and rotate, and use the gate to peel for your carries or escape a collapse rather than dive into one. You can still hold a side lane and threaten poke against anyone who steps up, but you lose a straight duel against the hypercarries you used to bully. Be useful by controlling space and starting fights on your terms, not by pretending the burst stance still one-shots people.

Teamfights

Your fight starts before the enemy knows it has. Open from max range in Cannon stance, gate a charged shot into their grouped backline or onto a carry a step too far forward, and let that chip set the terms. When the fight commits, the gate works both ways: speed your team in, or knock a diver off your carry with Hammer and hop back out before the answer lands. You are not a frontliner, so deal your damage from the edge, aim the knockback at a key dash, and do not get greedy with the melee stance against a team that can punish you up close. Positioned right, your poke wins half the fight before the first real trade.
