Gragas Baron Lane

Gragas Baron lane counters include Fiora, Gwen, and Aatrox. See the best build, runes, matchups, and game plan for Wild Rift Patch 7.3A.

How to play

  • Take a short trade and leave Prepare your 2nd ability, then use your barrel and slam to land the empowered attack. Move away before the enemy fighter can extend the trade.
  • Use your sustain to protect your farm Trigger your passive heal while last-hitting or poking, but watch your mana. Do not push every wave without knowing where the jungler is.
  • Control where the fight happens Throw your ultimate behind a caught target to bring them toward allies, or between your carry and a diver to separate them.

Strengths

  • Sustain and flexible short trades help him survive many melee lanes.
  • Several control tools let him peel or engage according to the draft.
  • AP items retain meaningful pick damage while health and haste support repeat trades.

Weaknesses

  • A blocked or missed slam can leave him exposed to a long duel.
  • Repeated barrels consume the mana he needs to disengage.
  • His ultimate can save an enemy by knocking them away from allied damage.

Why this build

Rod of Ages gives Gragas a lane-focused health and mana base, followed by Lich Bane for the empowered attack he already wants to land. Cosmic Drive makes the short-trade pattern easier to repeat and escape. Deathcap and Void Staff preserve damage later, but an early defensive component is worthwhile when it keeps a difficult lane playable.

Core Build

Rod of Ages Buy first so its stacking starts early. Health and mana support Gragas's repeated short trades, while Eternity helps him sustain through ability use and return damage. Lich Bane Buy second to make the attack after Drunken Rage (2nd) a real threat. Gragas already weaves this empowered attack into his lane trade before disengaging. Cosmic Drive Ability haste and movement speed help Gragas repeat a barrel and slam trade without staying in a fighter's attack range afterward. Rabadon's Deathcap After Gragas has mana, health and a reliable Spellblade hit, Deathcap raises the damage of the full rotation for side-lane picks and objective fights. Void Staff Use the final slot to cut magic resistance on targets Gragas cannot burst through with flat penetration. Replace it with Cryptbloom when team utility matters more than maximum penetration.

Situational Items

Zhonya's Hourglass Build this for after his E (3rd) and cask land him in the middle of their team. Buy Seeker's Armguard early for the armor and ability power. Banshee's Veil Build this when the enemy has crowd control ready for his E (3rd), which is the one thing that stops an engage he has committed to. Morellonomicon Build this when enemies heal through Gragas's ganks or teamfight combo. Barrel Roll (1st) and Explosive Cask (Ult) can apply Grievous Wounds across a group before his allies follow up; Oblivion Orb is enough early. Oceanid's Trident Build this when the enemy has shields that keep absorbing the burst he set his engage up for. Cryptbloom The alternative to Void Staff. Less penetration, but the ability haste and healing on takedown help in the fights his cask starts. Choose it when enemies have not built much magic resist, so trading Void Staff's extra damage for more ability haste and an area heal after takedowns is worthwhile. Armored Advance Swap the damage boots for armor against an attack-based Baron laner. Gragas wants to survive the return hits while his disengage is on cooldown. Chainlaced Crushers Swap the damage boots against magic damage and heavy crowd control so Gragas can reach his defensive slam after the first disable.

Situational choices

Replace Cosmic Drive with Zhonya's Hourglass when surviving a committed dive is essential. Banshee's Veil covers a key opening spell instead. Keep Void Staff and Cryptbloom mutually exclusive, and buy an early anti-heal component when repeated healing erases your lane trades.

Gragas Baron Lane Counters

Who counters Gragas Baron Lane in Wild Rift (WR)? These champions beat Gragas in the Baron lane matchup, with how each one wins. Learn to play around them or ban them in ranked.

  • Fiora: Fiora can parry Gragas's slam or ultimate and punish the recovery with a Vital hit. Poke with barrels to draw out her defensive timing, avoid a predictable straight-line all-in, and use the wave to limit her chase.
  • Gwen: Gwen can avoid ranged barrel pressure with her mist and win a prolonged melee exchange after Gragas spends his first rotation. Make the trade brief, leave before her repeated snips and attacks accumulate, and do not follow her into the mist without support.
  • Aatrox: Aatrox can answer a short Gragas trade with multiple knockup zones and healing if the slam ends in an exposed position. Save movement to leave the next sweet spot and buy early anti-heal when his sustain is denying every successful barrel hit.
  • Kennen: Kennen can harass Gragas before he reaches empowered-attack range and use movement speed to avoid a telegraphed slam. Farm with barrels when necessary and hold your ultimate to separate his engage from the enemy team's follow-up.
  • Vayne: Vayne can dodge a barrel or slam with a short reposition and then punish Gragas with repeated true-damage attacks. Keep the wave near your tower, avoid walls that enable her stun, and wait for a gank rather than chasing her across the lane.

Champions Gragas Is Strong Against

Gragas's best matchups in Wild Rift. Gragas holds an edge against these picks in the Baron lane role, so look to press the advantage and contest objectives.

  • Jax: Gragas can poke Jax with a barrel and use his slam to disengage rather than trading attacks through the dodge stance. Save the empowered attack until the dodge ends, then leave before Jax gets a second sustained attack window.
  • Tryndamere: Gragas's slows and knockbacks let him refuse the extended attack trade that Tryndamere needs. Keep your slam for the spin or retreat, and save the ultimate to create distance when Tryndamere becomes temporarily unkillable.
  • Renekton: Gragas can sustain between Renekton's short combos and interrupt an approach with his slam when the minion line is clear. Respect the empowered stun, take a short barrel trade after Renekton spends fury, and disengage before his next dash returns.
  • Riven: Gragas can interrupt a predictable Riven approach with Body Slam (3rd), then move away while her remaining combo loses reach. Keep your dash available until she commits rather than spending it to farm and giving her an uncontested all-in.
  • Malphite: Gragas's passive healing and magic damage make Malphite's armor-focused trading plan less effective. Use short barrel trades while preserving mana, and spread from your teammates when Malphite's ultimate can turn an even lane into a river engage.

Early Game

Start with controlled barrel farming and use Happy Hour (Passive) as part of an actual trade or last hit. Prepare Drunken Rage (2nd) before entering melee range so the damage reduction covers the return hit. Body Slam (3rd) is blocked by units in its path, so open a clear angle before committing. Buy Rod of Ages early and let the lane come toward you if the opposing fighter wins longer exchanges.

Mid Game

Push only with enough information to retreat, then move toward the river with Teleport or a cleared wave. Threaten catches from fog rather than walking directly through the enemy frontline. Gragas can hold a side lane, but repeated rotations with a teammate are usually safer than forcing a duel against a dedicated tank killer.

Late Game

Look for one displacement that gives your team a reachable target. Keep Flash available for a decisive slam angle or for surviving a dive. When a side-lane opponent can beat you through your first rotation, clear defensively and group before Baron instead of trading health for a tower you cannot finish.

Teamfights

Choose engage or peel before casting Explosive Cask (Ult). Against divers, keep Body Slam (3rd) and the knockback near your carry; against an exposed backline, land control before trying to move them into allied damage. Do not scatter a group your teammates have already trapped in an area ultimate.
