Swain Mid Lane Wild Rift Guide

Swain mid lane counters include Syndra, Brand, and Viktor. See the best build, runes, matchups, and game plan for Wild Rift Patch 7.3.

Overview

Swain builds permanent health from Soul Fragments. Enemy champions leave one after dying, Vision of Empire collects one from each champion it hits, and recasting Nevermove collects one from every rooted champion it pulls. Each fragment heals Swain for a percentage of his maximum health and grants 16 permanent health. Nevermove damages on the outward pass, then its returning claw detonates on the first enemy hit to root nearby enemies for 1.5 seconds. The key combo is Nevermove into Vision of Empire before pulling. Vision deals 50% bonus damage to immobilized targets and collects its own fragment, then Nevermove's recast pulls all rooted champions and collects another fragment from each. Death's Hand fires five bolts and deals reduced damage from additional bolts hitting the same target, making it strongest at close range after the pull. Demonic Ascension begins with 50 Demonic Energy. Energy decays over time; faster after five seconds; but draining at least one enemy champion generates more every half-second and a champion takedown refills it completely. The form ends at zero Energy, so spacing or crowd control that removes every champion from drain range is often more dangerous than raw damage. Demonflare unlocks after two seconds and can be recast while the form remains active.

Strengths

  • Soul fragments and his ultimate drain make him very hard to burst, so he survives fights that would kill a normal mage.
  • A long delayed root that feeds into a pull gives him real pick threat, both in lane and from brush.
  • He does his best work in messy grouped fights, healing off every nearby enemy while his nova chunks the whole group.

Weaknesses

  • No dash and no blink, so anyone who out-ranges or kites him plays around his slow walk and telegraphed snare.
  • Grievous Wounds reduces his drain healing, forcing him to rely more on stored health and keeping champions in range to sustain Demonic Energy.
  • The snare's visible windup and delay let mobile assassins and dash-heavy skirmishers dodge the one button his combo needs.

Swain Mid Lane Counters

Who counters Swain Mid Lane in Wild Rift (WR)? These champions beat Swain in the mid lane matchup, with how each one wins. Learn to play around them or ban them in ranked.

  • Syndra: Syndra out-ranges your root and stun-bursts you from a distance your sustain cannot answer, and her early poke out-paces your drain before your fragments stack.
  • Brand: Brand's stun chain interrupts the engage your whole kit is built around, he out-ranges your reach, and his full combo chunks you faster than your drain heals it back.
  • Viktor: Death Ray damages Swain before Nevermove can threaten, Gravity Field controls the ground his ultimate wants to occupy, and Power Transfer shields Viktor's short return trade. Approach from a side angle after the field is used, pull Viktor into Demonic Ascension rather than walking through the zone, and preserve health until an extended fight is actually available.
  • Vel'Koz: Vel'Koz pokes from a range your short reach cannot answer, his knockup stops the walk-up your game depends on, and his true damage chips through your sustain faster than you heal it back.

Champions Swain Is Strong Against

Swain's best matchups in Wild Rift. Swain holds an edge against these picks in the mid lane role, so look to press the advantage and contest objectives.

  • Vex: Swain never dashes, so he does not create free Gloom marks. Mistral Bolt and Looming Darkness are telegraphed, but Personal Space is immediate and Shadow Surge gives Vex a real dash; track the prepared Doom fear before committing to a drain fight.
  • Fizz: His whole game is a burst dive, and you are a drain tank built to outlast exactly that: your healing beats his combo, and he is squishy once pinned next to you.
  • Yasuo: Wind Wall can deny Nevermove's projectile path, but it does not stop the drain from Demonic Ascension once Yasuo has dashed into Swain's range. Bait the wall before using Nevermove, place Vision of Empire on his return path, and extend the fight with the ultimate only after he has consumed nearby minions as dash targets.
  • Akali: Her burst is built for squishies, and your ultimate heals it back while she is stuck in melee next to you; the shroud breaks targeting but not your ground root.
  • Ahri: Ahri's charm burst is meant for squishies, and you heal it back, so her all-in feeds the ultimate it was supposed to kill; only her three dashes let her get away.

Early Game

Aim Nevermove so its returning claw reaches the champion after the outward pass. When it roots, immediately place Vision of Empire under the immobilized target to gain the 50% damage bonus and its fragment, then recast E before the root ends to pull and collect another. Follow at close range with Death's Hand so multiple bolts connect. Against mobile targets, hold E until their dash is spent instead of throwing the only setup into open space.

Mid Game

Crash the mid wave before moving to dragon or Herald, then enter the river fight from beside your frontline. Activate Demonic Ascension when at least one champion will remain in drain range, because its initial Energy otherwise decays and begins falling faster after five seconds. Each half-second of champion drain offsets the normal decay, while a takedown refills the resource. Use Demonflare after its lockout to slow enemies back into range, and return to the side wave when no objective or skirmish is available.

Late Game

Clear side waves only when Swain can rejoin before Baron or Elder is contested. In the setup, stay close enough to the frontline to land Nevermove without entering every enemy damage source. Grievous Wounds reduces the healing from Demonic Ascension but not its damage or Energy generation, so keep a reachable champion in range and use Demonflare to prevent an easy disengage. A takedown refills Energy, but do not chase one beyond allied vision and lose the objective position.

Teamfights

Activate Demonic Ascension as bodies collide so champion drains replenish Demonic Energy immediately. After two seconds, use Demonflare's 60% decaying slow to keep enemies inside and continue recasting it while the form lasts. Root with Nevermove, land Vision of Empire during the immobilize for its bonus damage and fragment, then pull for another fragment. Zhonya's is especially strong after committing because the drain, healing, and Energy generation continue during stasis while enemies remain nearby.
